WASHINGTON (AP) — Quarreling and confusion marked the start of the Senate's confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh today, with Democrats trying to block the proceedings because of documents being withheld by the White House. Protesters also disrupted the proceedings.
In his opening remarks released ahead of delivery, Kavanaugh sought to tamp down the controversy over his nomination, which would likely shift the closely divided court to the right.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Only two months before the midterm elections, bipartisan legislation to try to prevent foreign hacking into U.S. election systems is stalled in Congress as the White House and some Republicans worry it could exert too much federal control over the states.
Supporters of the bill say the delay could embolden Russia, which targeted election infrastructure in at least 21 states in 2016.

Brunt of Tropical Storm Gordon misses Lincoln Parish

Graphic courtesy of The National Weather Service - The weather maps shows the predicted amount of rainfall from Tropical Storm Gordon’s impact.

While the area was ready, Tropical Storm Gordon looks to have primarily danced away from Lincoln Parish.
The National Hurricane Center said this morning that Gordon was weakening on a path into Arkansas after striking the coast with 70 mph winds, barely shy of hurricane strength, near Pascagoula, Mississippi. The remnants will likely cause flash flooding across parts of seven states and as far north as Iowa in the coming days.
But that doesn’t seem to be the case for Lincoln Parish, which is located on east of the storm’s center where rainfall amounts are not high.

Head Start settlement OK’d; building readied for program to move

Lincoln Parish School system officials say it was worth the 10 months of negotiating to get a $4.5 million insurance settlement from the October 2017 fire that destroyed the main building of the Paul E. Slaton Head Start Center on Oakdale Street.
The school board on Tuesday voted to accept the settlement from FM Global of Dallas.
“The process has been long but at the same time not rushing has benefitted us tremendously,” school Superintendent Mike Milstead said.

Reserve fund to cover shortfall, but challenges loom

The Lincoln Parish School Board has adopted what’s technically a deficit budget for the current fiscal year. And while the board has plenty of reserves to cover the $2.2 million shortfall, there are challenges ahead.
“We cannot maintain our current levels of staffing with our revenue,” George Murphy, the school system’s business manager, told the board Tuesday night.
The board has three options for the future, Murphy said: raise revenue, cut expenses or a combination of both.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senators began the fourth and final day of hearings for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh today, but with the nominee finished answering questions the day they seemed unlikely to alter his path to confirmation.
Senate Democrats worked into the night Thursday in a last, ferocious attempt to paint Kavanaugh as a foe of abortion rights and a likely defender of President Donald Trump. But after two marathon days in the witness chair in a Senate hearing room, Kavanaugh appeared on his way to becoming the court's 114th justice.
